Deuteronomy 2

Estude

Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Suph sea, as Jehovah spoke to me; and we surrounded Mount Seir many days.

And Jehovah said to me, saying,

It is much for you to go··around this mountain; turn yourselves northward.

And command thou the people, saying, You are to cross··over into the border of your brothers the sons of Esau, who dwell in Seir; and they shall fear you, and you shall take··heed exceedingly.

Meddle not with them, for I will not give you of their land, not even a step of a sole of a foot; for I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession.

You shall purchase food from them for silver, and you shall eat; and also water you shall procure from them for silver, and you shall drink.

For Jehovah thy God has blessed thee in all the deeds of thy hand; He knows thy going through this great wilderness: these forty years Jehovah thy God has been with thee; thou hast not been··in··want of a thing.

And when we passed··by from our brothers the sons of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, from the way of the desert from Elath, and from Ezion-geber, we turned and passed··by the way of the wilderness of Moab.

And Jehovah said to me, Besiege not the Moabites, neither meddle with them in battle; for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar to the sons of Lot for a possession.

The Emim dwelt in her before, a people great and many, and of stature as the Anakim;

these also were reckoned Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the Moabites call them Emim.

And the Horite dwelt in Seir before; but the sons of Esau dispossessed them, when they had blotted· them ·out from their faces, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did to the land of his possession, which Jehovah gave to them.

Now rise··up, and cross··over the brook Zaredh. And we crossed··over the brook Zaredh.

And the days in which we walked from Kadesh-barnea, until we crossed··over the brook Zaredh, were thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war was entirely consumed from among the camp, as Jehovah promised to them.

For even the hand of Jehovah was against them, to rout them from among the camp, until they were entirely consumed.

And it was, as the men of war were entirely consumed and died from among the people,

that Jehovah spoke to me, saying,

Thou art passing··through today, Ar, the border of Moab;

and when thou comest··near next··to the sons of Ammon, besiege them not, nor meddle with them; for I will not give thee of the land of the sons of Ammon any possession; because I have given it to the sons of Lot for a possession.

(That also was reckoned a land of Rephaim; Rephaim dwelt in her before; and Ammon calls them Zamzummim;

a people great, and many, and lifted··high, as the Anakim; but Jehovah blotted· them ·out before them; and they dispossessed them, and dwelt in their stead;

as He did for the sons of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, when He blotted··out the Horite from before them; and they dispossessed them, and dwelt in· their ·stead, even··to this day;

and the Avim which dwelt in Hazerim, even to Gaza, the Caphtorim, which came forth out of Caphtor, blotted· them ·out, and dwelt in their stead.)

Arise, journey, and cross··over the brook Arnon; see, I have given into thy hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and meddle with him in battle.

This day I will begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the faces of the peoples that are under all the heavens, who shall hear the fame of thee, and shall tremble and travail from before thee.

And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

Let me cross··through thy land by the high way, by the high way I will go, I will not turn··aside to the right··hand nor to the left.

Thou shalt ration me food for silver, and I shall eat; and give me water for silver, and I shall drink; only I will pass··through on my feet

(as the sons of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did to me) until I shall cross··over Jordan into the land which Jehovah our God gives us.

But Sihon king of Heshbon was· not ·willing to let us pass by him; for Jehovah thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, so··that He might give him into thy hand, as it is at this day.

And Jehovah said to me, Behold, I have··begun to give Sihon and his land before thee; begin to possess, that thou mayest possess his land.

And Sihon went··out to meet us, he and all his people, to fight toward Jahaz.

And Jehovah our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

And we captured all his cities at that time; and doomed every city of the mortals, and the women, and the infant*; we left not a survivor;

only the beasts we plundered for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we captured.

From Aroer, that is on the lip of the brook Arnon, and from the city that is by the brook, even to Gilead, there was not a city too set··on··high for us; Jehovah our God gave all before us;

only to the land of the sons of Ammon thou came· not ·near; all on the one hand of the brook Jabbok, and the cities in the mountain, and all that Jehovah our God commands us.
