In addressing the disciples, it's meaningful that Jesus "spake unto them, saying..." The use of both "spake" and "saying" represents the fact that the Lord flows into us both intellectually and emotionally to help us grasp a higher spiritual state – in this case the idea that the Lord's love lives even in the extremes of the church. That they should "be not afraid" means they can accept and embrace that deeper truth.
