This is the opening verse of one of the Bible's best-loved stories: the first miracle of Jesus, when he turned water into wine. It is a story that predicts and encapsulates Jesus' ministry, during which he turned the literal, earthly ideas of the Jewish religion – represented by water – into the deeper, more symbolic spiritual ideas of the Christian church, represented by wine.

The "third day" represents the completion of a spiritual state; it means Jesus had gone through the necessary spiritual development and was prepared for his ministry. A marriage or wedding represents the union between the desire for good and the understanding of what "good" is and how to achieve it, with the ultimate marriage occurring between the Lord's truth and the desire for good in His church. The fact that this was in "Cana of Galilee" means it is the church among the Gentiles, or the non-Jews. "Mother" represents the Lord's church on earth, and especially the true ideas taught by that church. "Jesus" represents the Lord's Divine Goodness, His desire to love us and bring us to states of true happiness.

Put it together, this verse shows that the Lord was ready to reveal the new truths He was bringing to mankind, and would do it among people who wanted to be good and would be receptive to His ideas.
