Ultimately the Lord will take care of those who persevere in the face of temptation. He does this by taking us away from the attacks of evil and bringing us into a state where we can fully experience the desire for good we’ve been seeking. That state is represented here by Lot’s house, and is a state of loving other people, caring for them and serving them. When the door – which represents desires and ideas leading to the state within – is closed, it means the evil represented by the men of Sodom is no longer a threat; it cannot harm the people inside.

On one level, this story represents the last stages of the Ancient Church, with a remnant being saved because it was still in a state of love to the neighbor. On another level it is about every one of us, and the security and tranquility the Lord can bring us to if we can battle temptation in pursuit of becoming better people.
